Our materials have been created with the support of our sister charity, Sage Youth, to address a number of needs specific to the student populations that we serve. We would be delighted to send you any (or all!) of our workbooks. It would be greatly appreciated if you, your school or organization would make a donation to cover the cost of the paper and shipping. Funds received from the distribution of our workbooks go to our granting program.
The workbooks are not given a specific grade level. Many of our teenage students who read at primary grade levels are embarrassed when their materials use those primary titles (e.g. Grade 1, Grade 2, etc.). Instead, we have titled the first level PROMISE, the second ACHIEVEMENT, and the third EXCELLENCE.
Many of the materials available on the market are created in the United States. Our books have a strong Canadian theme.
A large percentage of our students are of colour, new Canadian, from financially disadvantaged families, from single parent homes and many face a number of physical and developmental challenges. We have worked to make our workbooks as inclusive as possible to all of our students.
Our students describe the majority of exercise books and workbooks on the market as being dreadfully boring! They sometimes succeed in turning our children off reading entirely. We have made our materials pertinent to the children's lives in a way that will capture their interest.
Many of the stories have a strong ethical lesson.
Recent testing has shown that Canadian children in the school system may be able to read, but that their comprehension skills are very low. The questions following each story encourage the children to develop their analytical skills. They simply get our students in the habit of being readers with strong comprehension skills.
Our materials support students in developing their literacy skills by following the four key steps that we have identified:
These three workbooks help students develop from basic to advanced comprehension skills. The stories are inclusive of Canada's diverse communities. They encourage conversation and take a holistic approach with themes that include ethical and everyday life issues.
Similar to the workbooks described above, these materials celebrate our First Nations communities with real stories about Aboriginal children.
These workbooks support children at kindergarten through to middle school levels in developing their phonetic, spelling and grammar skills.
These two short workbooks support students in developing social skills, courtesy and general knowledge skills.
